The GSDC is the economic development arm of the City of Greater Sudbury, consisting of an 18-member volunteer board of directors, including City Councillors and the Mayor, and supported by City staff. 

Working with the Director of Economic Development, the GSDC acts as a catalyst for economic development initiatives and supports the attraction, development and retention of business in the community. Board members represent various private and public sectors including mining supply and services, small and medium-sized enterprises, hospitality and tourism, finance and insurance, professional services, retail trade, and public administration.

The COVID-19 Economic Recovery Strategic Plan will guide decisions of the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation Board of Directors to better understand the needs of the business community, identify actions that will streamline business and economic recovery, and prioritize key areas of focus.

Consultation with local businesses and stakeholders will build the plan to understand the challenges and opportunities currently facing the business community, to leverage strengths, and to address gaps.

The City of Greater Sudbury’s Economic Development staff and members of the GSDC Board of Directors will conduct community consultation through focus groups, interviews and online engagement.

Direct outreach is underway to engage stakeholders representing key economic sectors, independent business owners, the arts and business associations.

A draft Economic Recovery Strategic Plan will be prepared this fall for review by the Economic Recovery Committee of the GSDC. 

The GSDC Board of Directors and Greater Sudbury Council will receive the Plan for consideration of endorsement later this year.

Quarterly monitoring of the Plan will be ongoing to review the progress of action items.

The City’s Economic Development division established a business continuity group at the outset of the pandemic in March with citywide representation to discuss challenges, resources and opportunities. 

Staff conducted outreach to local businesses and organizations through phone calls and online surveys to better understand impacts on their operations.

With Stage 3 reopening of the provincial economy, the focus of the GSDC is to reverse the effects of the pandemic in partnership with the business community.
