Whitewater Park Improvements

With support from the City of Greater Sudbury, community groups have the opportunity to bring forward project ideas to enhance our community. These ideas are assessed by staff to ensure they align with the City’s Master Plan and service level provisions. Ideas for new assets are often reviewed with the community to ensure there is sufficient support. The community group is responsible for raising 100 per cent of the estimated project cost before any construction or procurement takes place.

Whitewater Park Project Idea

Whitewater Park in Azilda has the potential to become one of Greater Sudbury’s finest assets. Whitewater Lake in Azilda is part of the Vermillion watershed and has been a favourite space for fishing, swimming and boating. In addition to the boat launch, there is a trailer park, canteen, playground, splash pad, picnic gazebo and a small welcome centre.

Café Heritage, a non-profit organization that produces heritage-themed events in northeastern Ontario, has introduced Thursday evening summer concerts at the park and has now proposed a new project idea. Café Heritage wants to build a stage/pavilion at the park.

The project idea consists of:

  • A 24’ x 20’ stage to be used for events and showcase local artists – Approved - construction beginning in May 2025, expected completion by June 4, 2025.
  • A permanent tipi built with seven poles (Seven Sacred Teachings) to be used for programming in the park – Project not moving forward at this time; requires further consultation with Indigenous community.
  • A fire pit to be used for special events – Project not moving forward at this time; requires a review of Parks by-law.
