Background – About the Project

In early 2021, the City of Greater Sudbury secured $4,380,000 through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program to support the revitalization of outdoor court facilities across the community.

This multi-year project includes upgrades to:

  • 14 outdoor tennis court facilities
  • 14 outdoor basketball courts

The goal is to improve recreation infrastructure, enhance user experience, and increase community use.

What’s Included

  • Court conversions:
Underutilized tennis courts in over-supplied areas may be converted to other uses such as pickleball or skateboarding. Approximately 25–30% of courts have been identified for conversion.
  • Accessibility and safety improvements:
Rehabilitation or replacement of asphalt surfaces, along with improved pathways and entrances.
  • Enhanced playability:
Installation of new nets, fencing, basketball standards, and related equipment.

Project Timeline

Work is being completed in phases, with approximately four to five facilities upgraded each year. Outdoor court revitalization began in spring 2022 and is expected to be complete by 2027.
