Future-Ready Development Services Public Consultation

The Future-Ready Development Services Committee is a new, ad-hoc committee of Council with a mandate to review the City’s development services.

Following a period of study and consultation, the committee will develop a report with recommendations to Council to ensure that the City of Greater Sudbury has the capacity and best-in-class policies and processes to support anticipated growth in residential and non-residential development.

The committee members include Mayor Lefebvre (Chair), Councillor Cormier (Vice-Chair), Councillor Fortin, Councillor Landry-Altmann, and Councillor Parent.

What are development services?

Development services include the functions, programs, policies and departments involved in the review, approval and oversight of building, construction, and development projects within the City of Greater Sudbury. These primarily include permitting, building services, engineering services, environmental services, planning services, and some investment and economic development programs.

The municipality is responsible for delivering these services within the broader legislative framework and rules set by the province of Ontario (e.g., Municipal Act, 2001; Planning Act, 1990; Building Code Act, 1992; Development Charges Act,1997; Environmental Assessment Act, 1990, etc.). The municipality also works with other agencies, like Conservation Sudbury, in processing and approving some applications (Conservation Authorities Act, 1990).

How can I participate?

As part of its study, the committee is seeking feedback about public perception, familiarity, and experience with development services at the City of Greater Sudbury.

The committee is particularly interested in hearing constructive solution-oriented ideas for process improvements that are within the control of the municipality (see above re: provincial legislation). The committee will also be looking at how we compare to other municipalities, and are open to hearing about your experience, if any, engaging with development services in other cities and towns.
