Government Road Lift Station

Archaeological Screening Process

Project Background:

The City of Greater Sudbury is completing an Archaeological Screening Process to replace the existing Government Road Lift Station located at 121 Government Road in Coniston. The existing lift station must be upgraded including the construction of a new wet well structure to provide additional capacity to meet current and future flow requirements for the community.

The new Lift Station would be constructed within existing City property that is currently being used for both the Coniston Water Pollution Control Plant and the Government Road Lift Station. The Archeological Screening Process is being completed in accordance with the requirements of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment, which is an approved process under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. In support of the Archaeological Screening Process, a Stage 1 Archaeological Assessment was completed to identify known and potential archaeological resources, negative impacts on these resources, and mitigation measures.

Project Status:

A Cultural Heritage Review and Stage 1 Archaeological Assessment was completed to review the potential and known built heritage resources, cultural heritage landscapes, and potential archaeological resources. Results of the studies concluded that there are no known or potential built heritage resources or cultural heritage landscapes within the study area, and the area does not exhibit any known archaeological resources and exhibits low archaeological potential.

A Draft Summary Technical Memorandum with supporting information was developed to document the Archaeological Screen Process and has been provided for public information during a 30-day public review period. As such, feel free to reach out to the Project Team Members for additional information or questions.
