Minnow Lake Disc Golf Course Community-Led Project

Minnow Lake Disc Golf Project

In response to the increasing popularity of the sport, the Nickel City Disc Golf Club has proposed the development of a new 18-hole disc golf course in the Minnow Lake area, following the City’s guidelines for disc golf development through the Community-Led Projects framework.

The location identified is behind Minnow Lake Place, along parts of the Oak Forest Trail. This course would provide a unique recreational opportunity for the growing number of disc golf enthusiasts in Greater Sudbury.

Course Design and Considerations

Unlike traditional golf, disc golf courses are designed to blend with the natural environment, making minimal alterations to the landscape. The proposed course would take advantage of the wooded areas and diverse terrain of the Minnow Lake property, offering players a fun and challenging experience while exploring the existing Oak Forest Trail.

The addition of this new 18-hole course in the Minnow Lake area would expand recreational opportunities and continue to promote the growth of this accessible, low-cost sport in the community, while offering a welcoming space for people of all ages and skill levels to engage in a fun outdoor activity.

The Nickel City Disc Golf Club has worked to ensure the project proposal aligns with the area's current environmental and recreational priorities, with the potential for long-term benefits to the community. As the sport continues to grow in popularity, this new course could play an important role in enhancing the City’s recreational offerings and promoting a healthier, more active community.

One hole would be strategically placed near the Minnow Lake Place volleyball courts, offering an accessible entry point for newcomers to try the sport in a familiar and open area.

Environmental Stewardship
As part of the City’s commitment to protecting and preserving the environment, we have worked closely with the Regreening Program team during the planning of the new disc golf course to ensure environmentally sensitive areas are avoided. To support ongoing stewardship of the site, signage will be installed to encourage users to respect surrounding vegetation and help maintain the area’s natural condition.

Timeline

Work on the course is set to begin in summer 2025, pending results of community engagement. Installation of disc golf holes would take place in phases over multiple summers with continued consultation with City staff.

Background
Disc golf is a rapidly growing sport that combines the precision of traditional golf with the challenge of navigating natural landscapes. Instead of using clubs and a ball, players throw a disc toward a target – a metal basket with hanging chains. The objective is to complete each hole in as few throws as possible while working around obstacles, such as trees, slopes and terrain.

Currently, Greater Sudbury offers these disc golf courses:

  • Lions Club of Sudbury Disc Golf Course, which features a challenging 22-hole layout
  • Kivi Park, which has a 6-hole course ideal for beginners
