Traffic Calming on Residential Roads
What is Traffic Calming?
Traffic calming refers to roadway design features that help reduce vehicle speeds and create safer, more comfortable streets for everyone. These measures are especially helpful on neighbourhood roads where residents walk, cycle, play and travel every day.
One of the most effective and straightforward tools is the speed bump, which encourages slower, more consistent driving. Communities that implement traffic calming often experience:
- Lower vehicle speeds, improving safety for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers
- Reduced cut-through traffic, helping maintain neighbourhood character
- Quieter, more livable residential streets
- More predictable and comfortable road conditions for people of all ages and abilities
The City of Greater Sudbury is committed to supporting vibrant, people-friendly neighbourhoods, and traffic calming plays a key role in achieving that vision.
This project is being funded through revenue generated by the City’s Automated Speed Enforcement program.
What’s Happening on Your Street?
Your roadway is one of eight locations across the city selected for proposed traffic calming improvements. These locations were identified as part of the City’s ongoing work to improve neighbourhood safety and respond to resident concerns about vehicle speeds.
A preliminary design was shared for public feedback. Thank you to everyone who took the time to review the proposed design and share comments, questions and concerns. Your input has helped staff better understand how each street is used and where adjustments may be needed.
Based on feedback received, the City is reviewing and updating the proposed design before moving ahead with final design and installation. The updated design will aim to balance traffic calming goals with resident access, parking, drainage, emergency response, winter maintenance and day-to-day street operations.
The first eight locations being reviewed are:
- Brenda Drive, Moonrock Avenue to St. Charles Lake Road
- Lansing Avenue, Lasalle Boulevard to Maley Drive
- Grandview Boulevard, Montrose Avenue to Moss Street
- Bancroft Drive, Kingsway to Bellevue Avenue
- King Street, Morin to Notre Dame Avenues
- Kelly Lake Road, Southview Drive to Copper Street
- Robinson Drive, Kelly Lake Road to Southview Drive
- Auger Avenue, Lasalle Boulevard to Falconbridge Road
