Wanapitei Alternate Trunk Watermain Environmental Assessment

The Process

The City of Greater Sudbury is undertaking a Schedule ‘B’ Class Environmental Assessment (EA) Study for the communities of Sudbury, Wanapitei and Coniston. The purpose of the study is to determine a suitable location for an alternate trunk watermain in accordance with the following problem statement:

The Wanapitei Trunk Watermain, a critical asset for Sudbury’s potable water supply, is aging and subject to failure risk. To enhance the City’s overall water supply reliability and redundancy, a secondary trunk watermain is proposed between the Wanapitei Water Treatment Plant and the Sudbury water distribution system. This environmental assessment study aims to determine the optimal route for the secondary trunk watermain.

Planning and approval for this project are proceeding in accordance with the requirements of the Class EA process, an approved planning document that establishes the process a municipality must follow to meet the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act. The Class EA process enables the comprehensive evaluation of the environmental impacts of a project and identifies appropriate mitigation measures, where required.

Current Project Status

The Notice of Study Commencement was shared with stakeholders, agencies, Indigenous Communities, and local interest groups on May 28, 2025. Environmental existing conditions will be evaluated during Spring/Summer 2025, and the information will be incorporated into the evaluation of alternatives. One in-person Public Consultation Centre will be held in Fall 2025 to share the existing environmental conditions; practical, sustainable and environmentally-conscious watermain alternatives; evaluation of alternatives process; and preferred solution. Notification of the Public Consultation Centre will be advertised in advance of the event, including the date/time and location. Representatives from the City of Greater Sudbury, relevant stakeholders and WSP will be in attendance to discuss the project with interested parties.

Public consultation is vital to the success of this study. Project updates and notices will be posted regularly to this website to keep stakeholders informed as the study progresses. We encourage anyone interested to participate and provide input throughout the study duration.
