Water and Wastewater Master Plan Update

The City of Greater Sudbury is updating its Water and Wastewater Master Plan to guide long-term infrastructure planning, support forecasted growth and ensure safe, reliable service across all communities.

This study follows the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process and is currently in Phases 1 and 2, which focus on identifying system needs, reviewing existing conditions and evaluating potential solutions.

What the Study Will Do

  • Plan for future population growth
  • Ensure safe, resilient water and wastewater services
  • Improve system efficiency and reliability
  • Support financial planning, including Development Charges and the Official Plan
  • Maintain regulatory compliance

Key Focus Areas

The update examines the City’s entire water and wastewater network, including treatment plants, storage facilities, booster stations, lift stations, watermains, sewers and forcemains. It also considers challenges such as system capacity, future demand, and inflow and infiltration during major storm events.

Public Engagement

Two Public Information Centres (PICs) are being held as part of the process:

  • PIC #1 (Fall 2025): Study overview and existing conditions
  • PIC #2 (Early 2026): Alternative solutions and preferred strategies

Residents are invited to share feedback for 30 days following each PIC. An online comment form is available on the project website.

Phase 1 input will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on January 15, 2026.

Next Steps

Feedback from PIC #1 will help refine and evaluate servicing alternatives. A preferred long-term strategy will be presented at PIC #2. The final Master Plan will be posted online for public review once complete.
