Greater Sudbury Wayfinding Strategy

As part of the ongoing efforts to improve resident and visitor experiences in Greater Sudbury, an updated wayfinding strategy is being developed to explore ways to make it easier to navigate and connect with our city.

Wayfinding refers to the systems, signage and design elements that help residents and visitors navigate public spaces efficiently. It includes street signs, maps, directional cues, landmarks, and sometimes digital tools that enhance accessibility and create a more intuitive experience. Good wayfinding ensures that people can find their destinations with ease, whether they’re walking, biking, driving or using public transit.

The City of Greater Sudbury, with its huge area and diverse communities, stands to benefit immensely from this new wayfinding strategy. With its mix of urban and natural landscapes, the city’s layout can be challenging for both locals and visitors to navigate efficiently. Wayfinding can enhance accessibility, promote tourism and support local businesses by making key destinations easier to find. Wayfinding can also help strengthen Greater Sudbury’s identity, reinforcing its unique character while making movement through the city more seamless and engaging.

This strategy is being created in association with pl.ural – a design planning firm rooted in landscape architecture, rural planning and graphic design. This project was made possible with support from the Ontario Active Transportation Fund

A self-paced, online Public Information Centre (PIC) is available in the “Documents” section. It gives an overview of the project and provides details on Greater Sudbury’s options for an updated wayfinding strategy. Please take a few minutes to review this document before responding to the survey. This survey will be available until June 25, 2025.
