Aquatic Service and Facility Review

Aquatic programming and services improve the quality of life for residents and contribute to a healthier community. To guide and manage the City’s short- and long-term investment in aquatic services, an Aquatic Service and Facility Review has been initiated.

The review will explore:

• Community needs and trends affecting aquatic participation
• Condition, effectiveness and performance of the City’s indoor swimming pools
• Related initiatives, such as the proposed Lionel E. Lalonde Centre Therapeutic/Leisure Pool, Kalmo Beach 10-Year Plan, and Lively Recreation Advisory Panel work
• Contributions of non-municipal service providers to the aquatic service delivery system
• Longer-term strategies for indoor pool renewal and development (type, location, timing)
• Strategies to enhance the public experience at splash pads and supervised beaches

Update – December 5, 2023

At the City Council meeting of December 5, 2023, Council received an overview of the first phase of the Aquatic Service and Facility Review, which is being conducted as part of the development of a 25-year vision for aquatic services in Greater Sudbury.

The first phase of work included a review of aquatic trends and usage, a preliminary assessment of facility condition and capital requirements and a comprehensive public and stakeholder engagement process.

A number of preliminary key findings are included in the report.

The second phase of the review will consist of a detailed facility needs assessment, implementation strategy and additional public consultation. The final report is scheduled to be presented to Council in September 2024.

Additional public input opportunities in 2024 will allow residents to provide feedback on the draft study and recommendations.
