Community Action Network Review

The City of Greater Sudbury is undertaking a review of Community Action Networks and their associated Terms of Engagement. The review was called for by Council as part of the 2019-2027 Strategic Plan and will inform the development of a new community engagement strategy, scheduled for completion in 2024.

What is a Community Action Network?

The City of Greater Sudbury established Community Action Networks (CANs) to provide a line of communication between the community and the City, and to help with the planning and implementation of community initiatives. CANs bring citizens together to build strong, engaged communities, foster civic engagement, and encourage public participation in local and municipal projects.

CANs are community driven and volunteer-led, with an elected executive structure. They receive an annual community grant, subject to Council approval, to support annual administrative costs such as marketing and promotion, mailouts, websites, and up to 25% can be used for CAN project expenses. They may also apply for financial support for projects through the Healthy Community Initiative Fund.

CANs work collaboratively with the City to identify the needs of the community and take action to implement projects and initiatives which have a positive impact on the quality of life in their neighbourhood. There are currently 20 CANs established throughout the Greater Sudbury community.

We need your help!

To ensure Community Action Networks are reaching their fullest and intended potential, we are looking for your feedback to effectively understand what is working well with the current model and what opportunities may be available to improve moving forward.

Feedback and written comments may be provided by Friday, September 8, 2023.
