  • Queen's Athletic Sports Complex tennis court (30 Cypress St., Sudbury)
  • Minnow Lake Place basketball court (1127 Bancroft Dr., Sudbury)
  • Capreol Lion's Den Park multi courts (2 Stull St., Capreol)
  • Wahnapitae Community Centre multi courts (161 Glenbower Cres., Wahnapitae)

Asphalt work was recently completed, these courts are expected to be finalized in 2025:

  • Copper Cliff multi courts (1 Tennis Club Ln., Copper Cliff)

Sites completed in 2024 include:

  • Kin Park basketball court (2732 Langdon St., Blezard Valley)
  • VLA Playground basketball court (26 O'Neil St., Lively)

Based on existing site conditions and available 2025 budget, these additional sites have been identified under the next phase of work for 2025:

  • Onaping Tot Lot (Fraser Avenue, Onaping)
  • Lion’s Park (4611 St. Joseph St., Hanmer)

These sites have been identified based on previous prioritization scoring and updated condition assessments.

We want to hear from you about the revitalization of these sites to ensure that facilities are designed to meet the needs of local neighbourhoods and communities. Stakeholders, such as the Greater Sudbury Pickleball Association, Sudbury Indoor Tennis Club, local basketball clubs, local skateboard enthusiasts, the City's Seniors Advisory Panel and Accessibility Advisory Panel, Community Action Networks and Neighbourhood Associations will also be engaged.

The community is invited to participate in public consultation sessions:

Residents are also encouraged to complete a survey below before May 9, 2025. In the "Locations and Options" section, select a location and complete the survey for that location. You can also call 311 to complete the survey. You may choose to comment on all locations or only the one in your neighbourhood/area.

Both the Capreol Lion's Den Park and Doug Mohns courts have been identified for revitalization. Capreol Lion's Den Park will see construction being in 2025, with work expected to being on Doug Mohns within the next three years. Consultation for both locations is taking place simultaneously to ensure a balanced evaluation of Capreol's outdoor sports courts and to gather the community’s input on desired sport opportunities for each site.

Note – there are no surveys for Queen’s Athletic Sports Complex (tennis) and Minnow Lake Place (basketball) as there is no room to expand or offer changes in programming at these locations.

The courts at both sites will be renewed through Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) funding.

Background

In early 2021, the City of Greater Sudbury was successful in its application for Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program funding in the amount of $4,380,000. This funding will support the revitalization of 14 outdoor tennis court facilities and 14 outdoor basketball courts across the community over the next several years. The project aims to improve the quality of Greater Sudbury’s recreation and leisure infrastructure and increase utilization.

Work will also include:

*The conversion of underutilized tennis pads in over-supplied areas, to alternative uses such as pickleball and skateboarding. This will result in a greater variety of recreational activities. Twenty-five to thirty per cent of courts have been identified for conversion.

*Improved safety and accessibility for users through the rehabilitation/replacement of asphalt surfaces and improved pathways and entrances.

*Improved playability of outdoor courts through installation of new netting, fencing, basketball standards and other equipment.

Work will be completed in phases. An average of four to five facilities will be scheduled for revitalization during each phase. Work commenced in the spring of 2022. The entire project is expected to be complete in 2027.

Projects Completed to Date:

  • Delki Dozzi Sports Complex (3 Mary St., Sudbury)
  • Elmview Playground (1045 Tilly St., Hanmer)
  • Lorne Brady Park (600 O’Neil Dr. W., Garson)
