Downtown Master Plan Review

Downtowns are important, historic and symbolic. They are the heart of a community, the reflection of a city’s image, pride and prosperity. A strong, implementable vision for downtown Greater Sudbury is critical to the future of our community.

The Downtown Sudbury Master Plan is our blueprint for revitalizing the downtown area, enhancing its economic, cultural and retail vibrancy, and solidifying its role as the urban hub of our region.

Developed over a 20-month period and endorsed by Council in April 2012, the Master Plan involved a thorough analysis of existing opportunities and challenges, a visioning exercise, detailed planning and design work and active engagement with a community liaison group.

Many of the 25 First-Year Action Items and numerous 10-Year Action Strategy Projects have been successfully completed. Ongoing initiatives include updating the Downtown Sudbury Parking Strategy and implementing Strategic Public Realm Improvements, both integral to the Junction East Project (Library and Art Gallery) and the South District (south of Brady Street). As part of the 2023 Budget Process, Council approved funding to update the Master Plan, ensuring it continues to meet our evolving needs.

Join us in shaping the future of downtown Sudbury as we update the Downtown Sudbury Master Plan. Your input is vital as we refine our vision and strategies to create a thriving, dynamic downtown that reflects our community's aspirations.

Project Steps

The update is to be undertaken in four phases:

  1. Initiation and Reconnaissance,
  2. Visioning and Strategies (current phase),
  3. Draft Master Plan Concept, and
  4. Master Plan Update, culminating in late 2025.

Status

The update is currently in phase two. City staff has been actively engaging with the public at events such as the Cultural Forum, the Business Improvement Area Annual General Meeting, and events hosted by the McEwen School of Architecture and Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce.

  • Urban Revitalization

The Greater Sudbury Development Corporation (GSDC) sponsored an event on May 27, 2024 entitled Urban Transformation: Learning from Rotterdam. The event featured keynote speaker Jan Knikker, Partner and Director of Strategy at MVRDV, who was a part of the urban revitalization of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. As the driving force behind MVRDV’s approach to architecture, urbanism and computing, Knikker shared key strategies and lessons from Rotterdam's journey.
