Howard Armstrong Recreation Centre, Hanmer

Before: Howard Armstrong Recreation Centre has a variety of recreational opportunities with soccer fields, a basketball court, a splash pad and hiking trails. Two play structures and a swing set were found to be in poor condition and in need of renewal in less than five years. These items will be removed in the spring 2019.

After: Residents told the City of Greater Sudbury they wanted a fitness focused playground design with structures that encourage climbing, balance, agility and co-ordination. Most requested park amenities were shaded rest areas, picnic areas and benches.

A new playground structure has an exciting variety of climbing apparatus, a slide and activities for tots including a telescope and a ship’s wheel, as well as an accessible feature and sails to provide shade.

An overview of the renewed Howard Armstrong Recreation Centre Playground area shows the approximate placement of new play equipment and benches. It does not show existing structures that do not require renewal and will remain in the playground.

Installation of new play structures, a new ground surface consisting of engineered wood fibre and two new courts for Beach Volleyball will begin in the spring 2019.
