Operation Greater Playgrounds

Fifteen municipal playgrounds will be renewed this year through a partnership of the City of Greater Sudbury and the United Way Centraide North East Ontario / Nord-est l’Ontario.
Greater Sudbury Council approved a phased renewal of 58 municipal playgrounds identified as being in poor condition as part of the 2018 municipal budget process. View the complete list of municipal playgrounds scheduled for renewal.

Coté Park, 215 Edward Avenue, Chelmsford

Most playground equipment was found to be in poor condition and in need of renewal in less than five years. All playground equipment, with the exception of a rock climbing wall and a swing set, will be removed in the spring 2019.
Installation of new play structures, including a new ground surface of engineered wood fibre, is scheduled for the spring 2019.

East Street Playground Tot Lot, Coniston

Installation of new play structures and a new ground surface consisting of engineered wood fibre were completed on November 28, 2018. Grass areas will be restored in the spring 2019.

Installation of new play structures was completed on October 20, 2018. A new ground surface consisting of engineered wood fibre will be installed in the spring 2019.

Howard Armstrong Recreation Centre, Hanmer

Two play structures and a swing set were found to be in poor condition and in need of renewal in less than five years. These items will be removed in the spring 2019.
After: Residents told the City of Greater Sudbury they wanted a fitness focused playground design with structures that encourage climbing, balance, agility and co-ordination. Most requested park amenities were shaded rest areas, picnic areas and benches.

Lakeview Playground, 420 Sunday Street, Sudbury

A climbing structure, sandbox digger and swinging wheel are still in good condition and remain in the playground.
Most requested park amenities were shaded rest areas, benches and gardens/flowers.

Lively Playground, 2015 Sixth Avenue

A swing set, climbing apparatus and play structure were found to be in poor condition and in need of renewal in less than five years. The City of Greater Sudbury removed these items.

Lonsdale Playground, 811 Lonsdale Avenue, Sudbury

This item will be removed in the spring 2019. A tot play structure and a spring toy are still in good condition and will remain in the playground.
Preferred activities were climbing multiple tiers of decking, swinging, slides at multiple heights and lengths and social interaction. Most requested park amenities were shaded rest areas, benches and a water fountain.

These items have been removed. A rocking “ladybug”, an interactive wall, a teeter-totter and a sandbox digger are still in good condition and remain in the playground.

After: Residents told the City of Greater Sudbury they wanted an equal mix of traditional, themed and fitness playground design with structures that encourage climbing, swinging, co-ordination and agility. Most requested park amenities were shaded rest areas, benches and bike racks.
New playground structures feature an exciting variety of climbing, agility and balancing apparatus with an accessible feature. A new swing set is suitable for both tots and older children.
Installation of new play structures and a new ground surface consisting of engineered wood fibre were completed on November 28, 2018. Grass areas will be restored in the spring 2019.
