The City of Greater Sudbury purchased the property at 1310 Sparks Street and will build a small community housing building for residents on the Social Housing Waitlist. It will host up to 14 affordable housing units, which will include space community support providers. The building will be energy efficient, requiring little energy for space heating and cooling.
The City will ensure all residents in the catchment area have an opportunity to understand the project, provide feedback and participate in the design aspects. The City will engage in community consultation in the fall and winter of 2020 to gain input into the development of a design for the property. The engagement used will ensure physical distancing directives are maintained. Efforts will be made to notify residents of the consultation efforts so that all residents may participate.
The City of Greater Sudbury’s 2019-2027 Corporate Strategic Plan includes revitalization and improvement of existing housing stock. The housing goal reflects Council’s desire for all citizens, especially vulnerable populations, to have access to safe, affordable, attainable and suitable housing options in the City of Greater Sudbury.
UPDATE: The community was invited to participate in the first of three virtual public consultation sessions, January 21, 2021 - 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. This was an opportunity to learn more about the project and to ask questions related to the new building.

When does the input on this public engagement end? I don't see any last date to fill in the survey or ask a question or leave a comment. Those dates should be on all projects you're seeking input to on this platform so folks can plan to gather their own comments or other comments if they're part of a group like a Community Action Network.

As direct neighbours my wife and I participated on the first zoom session and after viewing the second session were very encouraged to hear numerous times from City staff that our neighbourhood’s voices have indeed been heard and this project has been designated for seniors. Will that senior’s designation now be recognized in the official name of the project on signage, future correspondence as well as on this forum ?

The City intends to develop new community housing which will include space for community support services and programs, with older adults in mind.***Is the mention of “with older adults in mind” in regard to the housing, the services & programs or both ?

Hello, please provide me with correct info. "There is a need for 1 bedroom units and seniors are about 40 percent pf the one bedroom demand. We are going to listen to public input and design the units to that target". May I ask who and how many of the other 60% will be housed in this new facility. When will the citizen directly living near this building will be notified? Will the entire city have an input irrgardless of their address or will this be closed to just the citizen of this area (and not media)?

The answer to the question of who will live in the building depends on the number of eligible applicants that select this building as one of their choices on the community housing waitlist, as well as the approved building mandate. Everyone is able to provide input regarding this project, regardless of where they live. Residents of the neighbourhood will receive flyers and information on public engagement sessions delivered to their residence to encourage participation.

What New Sudbury really needs is a facility similar to downtown’s Parkside Centre. Has there been any discussion trying to fit in something similar within the framework of this project? Our neighbourhood has a large number of seniors that would be well served by such a facility.

Yes, another flyer and a survey is being developed and translated for distribution this year. Details on a January 2021 public engagement session are being finalized and will be included in the flyer.
