What are your ideas, Greater Sudbury?
over 4 years agokmabradleyalmost 4 years agoBuild a sustainable city with renewable energy cooperatives or renewable energy bonds
Create a program leveraging Sudbury Hydro that gives Sudburians an opporunity to invest in the building of a sustainable city that is powered by renewable energy. The concept is to give people the opportunity to purchase bonds for a set amount with a guaranteed rate of return where the proceeds of the fund goes into the building of renewable energy plants such as solar farms, wind turbine farms, thermal energy, biofuels, etc... It is obvious that we would not be able to rely on one sole technology but would have to have different energy technologies to ensure a 24 hour supply energy. But there are specialists like Rocky Mountain Institute in the US (I am sure there are Canadian Companies with similar skill sets) that have the expertise to build an energy plan that we can get behind and ensure that we move away from expensive and polluting energy sources.

A security guard should sit in on the bus routes at night so the drivers can concentrate on driving. To save $$, a student from Cambrian's Law & Security program can put in volunteer hours.

Synchronizing of the traffic signals along Lasalle Boulevard in Sudbury would optimize the flow of traffic, reduce aggressive driving and effectively reduce the likelihood of red-light running which is a very common occurrence in the city. Optimizing traffic signal timing is a low-cost, high-benefit approach to reducing congestion and maximizes traffic progression, avoids frequent stops with minimal use of braking, reduces idle time at stop lights, reduces fuel consumption and air pollution emission levels, reduces trip time and easy on the nerves. It would also minimize the diversion of traffic to local and residential streets and improves safety and traffic conditions.

Build roof top hydroponic gardens on downtown buildings to improve the city landscape, feed the homeless and help improve the overall health of the downtown core. Considering that there are a large number of human services focused on homeless citizens in the downtown area, there is an opportunity to improve the general well being of our fellow citizens. It could also include an element of encouraging homeless people to participate in growing the produce. I would also look at selling any excess fruits and veggies to local restaurants and grocers. It is an opportunity to use social enterprise to empower each other and build a sustainable city. It should be noted that there is energy savings associated with roof top gardens. Simply look at examples in Montreal and Toronto to seer how it becomes a net zero enterprise if well planned.
