Smart Cities Challenge
How would you use $10 million to improve technology in Greater Sudbury?
The City of Greater Sudbury is taking part in the Smart Cities Challenge, issued by the Government of Canada. The challenge encourages cities to adopt approaches to improving the lives of residents through innovation, data and connected technology.
The Smart Cities Challenge is calling on communities of our size to submit their big ideas, for a chance to win up to $10 million. The Challenge will be awarded to cities that can demonstrate innovative ways to use data and connected technology to address local issues.

2mistermightymooseabout 3 years agoUpdate Emergency Responder Technology
Outfit first responder vehicles with the latest technology to help in navigation, information, and facilitate more accurate reports. For example, outfit fire trucks with tablets that automatically populate when they are assigned a call with address, notes, nearest hydrant location, best route to travel, etc.
2roadmapabout 3 years agoSingle card to access all city services
It would be much more convenient for citizens to have a single card to access city services instead of a separate card for transit, library, etc.. Better yet, have a smart card with tap technology. People could pay for services on a website which would be then be on the card and not have to visit the transit terminal, citizen service centre, or other city facility to make purchases.

Internet provided free to citizens, delivered to households. Residents are responsible for connecting, but internet service is free. Provides community wide connectivity. https://morenet.ca/

Waze has partnered with other larger communities like the GTA to take live traffic data and let citizens use the Waze app (GPS software) to determine the fastest route home. Could help citizens to avoid traffic accidents, construction, etc.
