Smart Cities Challenge
How would you use $10 million to improve technology in Greater Sudbury?
The City of Greater Sudbury is taking part in the Smart Cities Challenge, issued by the Government of Canada. The challenge encourages cities to adopt approaches to improving the lives of residents through innovation, data and connected technology.
The Smart Cities Challenge is calling on communities of our size to submit their big ideas, for a chance to win up to $10 million. The Challenge will be awarded to cities that can demonstrate innovative ways to use data and connected technology to address local issues.

In the interest of water conservation, I am curious about the weather for my subdivision. Did it rain enough today / this week that I do not need to water my lawn?

Active911 is a digital messaging system that delivers alarms, maps, and other critical information instantly to first responders. Active911 also allows response efforts to be monitored in real time. This is a valuable tool that will immensely improve our current notification system for the volunteer fire fighter's response to emergencies.

The city is covered by rail lines that stretch to all communities and most major places of employment. Simply having a concrete slab at each station with a sign. This could not only improve transit and get more people out of their single occupancy vehicles. This would also help change our transit such that buses are not running long distances to the smaller communities.

Develop a software foundation for predictive analytics and combining data across departments which the city could build on and export expertise. Continually evaluated for accuracy, the system would automatically identify efficiencies across city project, serve as a foundation to connect future smart infrastructure
8ProcessEngalmost 3 years agoCentralized information for health services
Create a webpage or app which would act as a centralized source of health care information in the city. some clinics have wait times posted online, but this could be made available for all clinics and the ER. Traffic data could be utilized from online mapping services to estimate how long it would take someone to drive to, and wait to see a doctor; in many cases, this would not be the closest clinic, or the one the person usually goes to. This would hopefully spread the patient load more evenly between clinics - easing the burned on the busiest centers. It would also allow patients to access clinics that they may not have been aware of.
