How would you use $10 million to improve technology in Greater Sudbury?
The City of Greater Sudbury is taking part in the Smart Cities Challenge, issued by the Government of Canada. The challenge encourages cities to adopt approaches to improving the lives of residents through innovation, data and connected technology.
The Smart Cities Challenge is calling on communities of our size to submit their big ideas, for a chance to win up to $10 million. The Challenge will be awarded to cities that can demonstrate innovative ways to use data and connected technology to address local issues.

mistermightymooseover 6 years agoPartner with Waze for better travel
Waze has partnered with other larger communities like the GTA to take live traffic data and let citizens use the Waze app (GPS software) to determine the fastest route home. Could help citizens to avoid traffic accidents, construction, etc.
3Eco_Surgeover 6 years agoUsing of Street lighting infrastructure for data transfer to facilitate Citizens on various fronts including pedestrian safety
Adaptive control system, on the Tool-less Sensor Platform (TSP) to be mounted on street lighting after upgrading to LED type. The vision for TSP is that municipalities can use the fact that streetlights are everywhere, and that they have electrical power to become the ‘real estate’ upon which smart, connected infrastructure can be built. In addition to providing on-off / dimming / reporting functions for the street lights, these control nodes are designed to be functional and work with both our own and third party sensors, for monitoring water mains, water meters, weather, sound, motion, etc. Also could be used as a safety beacon to signal pedestrian SOS and signal emergency services with location.
1Karrieover 6 years agoUpdate and increase Homelessness services
Start by having an accessible shelter and possibly more than one due to the geographical area our city covers. Then increase access to homelessness services to increase chances of changing the lives of those who are homeless or close to being homeless.
1ProcessEngover 6 years ago"Open Data" concept
Move the city towards an "open data" concept where information such as energy use at city facilities, data from water and wastewater treatment facilities, traffic information, etc. is available to the public. This will allow for greater public engagement and allow citizens to understand how the city works on a more fundamental level.
2Mark Frayneover 6 years agoUse Kiosk and on-line application and fee service.
Establish service kiosks at high traffic centers (i.e. malls) and libraries that make it easier for citizens to access services, submit applications with fees, etc.
